Great Weekend!
It was a busy weekend, with tons of family time. {after a few tantrums from Trey, maybe a bit too much family time}
But in any event, here is the recap of a fun weekend in the Frankovitch household!
Friday night Joe and I started a new tradition. I can call it a new tradition if it has been 2 nights in a row, right? We played Scrabble on the iPad. It worked out well because since you have to hand the iPad to the other person when it is their turn, which meant that we each had time for our other standard evening activities - watching TV and working on the computer. I would love to say that we love to play a traditional game of scrabble without distractions and gaze into each other's eyes, but we just don't work like that. So this is a great compromise. In the first game I was leading by a ton and Joe came back from the dead, and the 2nd game he was leading from the beginning. I practiced on Sunday so I'm ready for the next rematch.
On Saturday we had our normal Zumba/Swim Class morning. I take the kids to the childcare at the Rec center while I take Zumba class. Then we go home for an hour, then back to the Rec center for back to back swim lessons. It was a nice day, so Joe played with Jonah outside while I watched Trey, then Joe took Trey outside while I got in the water with Jonah for his class. After naps we went for a hike at our favorite place, Castlewood Canyon. We tried a new hike up to a cave, which the kids loved. Dinner was frozen pizza and beer!
On Sunday Joe went to pick up the popup (see below), so Mari and I took a road trip with the kids. Due to some crappy google map directions that I printed, we ended up spending about 30 more unplanned minutes in the car, but it was a nice drive. We checked out Jellystone Park as our first possible camping trip of the season. It's hokey, but only about 40 minutes from the house so if it is a disaster we can always come home. It was not as bad as I expected, but not as good as I would have wished. We had fun exploring the trails around the campsites. Then we went just a bit further south to check out a new hike: Greenland Open Space Trail. The description sounded wonderful: Easy to Moderate, The trail is within over 3,000 acres of Greenland Open Space. Trail passes through native grasslands, by ponds, through rolling Gambel oak hills and skirts ponderosa pine forests. Views of Greenland open space, buttes and Pikes Peak. What we found was that the rolling hills and forests were miles away, and with 4 hungry kids including a 2 year old who only wanted to be carried, and it was just a long, fairly flat path. Nice for a long run some day, but wasn't a good choice for the kids. We walked about a mile and left to find food.
On the way home we saw a really bad wreck happen on the other side of the highway. A car was flipping over and over up an embankment and came to rest upside down at the top, while a truck crashed into one of those huge signs that shows the gas station logos, then came to rest in the middle of the highway. Cars behind slammed on their breaks and swerved. It was really scary. There was a cop on our side of the highway who was giving someone a ticket who probably saw it all, and we saw people getting out of their cars to run help. I've tried to find news of the accident on the web, but I can't find anything. Which is surprising because I'm positive the highway must have been shut down for some time. Very scary, and I hope everyone was ok.
After naps we got to check out our new popup! Well, new to us anyway. We are excited to do a ton of camping this year in comfort. It will probably be early May before we take it out for a spin so it doesn't get too cold at night.

A little boy rode his bike to our house today, rang the doorbell, and politely asked if Trey could come out to play. Trey surprised me and answered politely "I can't. We're leaving for a hike. But maybe tomorrow we can play together!".
It's hard for me to imagine that someday soon this will happen again, and Trey will go running out the door yelling behind him "Mom! I'm going to play with (insert neighborhood boy's name here)! I'll be back later!". And even more hard to conceive at this point, I'll let him go and yell after him "just be home by dinner!".
Now I know the definition of a runner. Apparently I'm not one.
Me: look Trey there's a runner
Trey: that's not a runner. He's a jogger.
Me: how can you tell the difference?
Trey: a jogger is only pretending to be a runner.

I love the sound of Joe helping Trey with his homework after dinner at the kitchen table. But at the same time it is a little surreal - how did Baby Trey become old enough to be 5 and be able to read?

Trey: I know. I have to wear green or I'll get pinched. By leprechauns. They are abouuuuutttttttttt the size of Jonah.

This takes the cake
It seems many of my posts are about Jonah's eating habits, or at least, many of them should be. It is one of his defining characteristics. He'll eat anything to score an onion. He loves blue cheese. He loves salad (especially the onions). He eats more than his older brother at most meals. School knows he is not feeling well when he doesn't eat more than all the other kids. At his school, the kids have snack 2 at a time when they get hungry - his teacher has to feed him first or he will hover at the table until there is a spot open. He jumps up and down with excitement when it is close to dinner time. His love of food, and foods most kids don't like, is amazing.
But this takes the cake... He's got a bit of a cough right now. Last night after bath he started coughing so hard that he threw up. In between his tears, he started chewing some of the food that had just come up that was still in his mouth. It was absolutely disgusting and funny at the same time.
