Eli 9 months

I'm hopelessly behind in documenting Eli's 9 month birthday!  I took the photos on time (mostly), so here they are.  Not our best photo session...

I do know that he weighed 17 lbs, 7.5 oz (10th percentile), 27.75' tall (30th percentile), and his head was 18' (60th percentile).

He also learned to feed himself this month!

Eli learned a new trick

Eli started eating puffs about a month ago, that wouldn't put them in his mouth by himself. He could pick them up easily with a little pincher grasp, but he never usually tried to put them into his mouth. If he could hold onto something with his fist like a cookie he would put that in his mouth. But he just didn't make the connection with bite sized foods. But this week he got it! The other day he ate 2 cooked baby carrots that were cut up in chunks and a bunch of puffs.

First time ingesting money

During nap time when they weren't supposed to be playing together, Jonah was in Trey's room and they were playing with Trey's money. Jonah threw a quarter up in the air, caught it in his mouth, and down it went (or so the story goes). He said it went all the down and was breathing fine, but I took him to the ER anyway for an X-ray. And yep - it's in his belly! So now we just wait for it to pass.

He loved the ER, unfortunately. There were toys in the room, they pushed him to the X-ray room in a wheelchair, and he thought the X-ray machine was cool. Not the deterrent I was hoping for.

Eli is so excited with his favorite toy!

He wears his excitement on his sleeve!  His eyes get wide and he circles his hands and feet.

A milestone reached!

Eli has been completely unswaddled for about a week now.  My baby is growing up too fast!

How it happened:  I was late coming home a few nights in a row (music night for Trey's class, school wide Sock Hop), so Joe put Eli to bed.  Joe's swaddle never lasts all night, but both times Eli slept all night.  So we, ok Joe, decided it was time to try no swaddle.  And since Eli was perfect, he went down fine and stayed asleep all night.  Swaddled every night of his life, then completely fine when he didn't have it.  I never expected "breaking the swaddle" to be a complete non-event!

I read somewhere recently that we do a good job celebrating "firsts," but just as important are the "lasts."  The last time giving a bath before a kid moves to showers, the last bottle, the last diaper.  You don't usually know when it's the last, and probably are happy at the time to get past that stage, but then you realize one day something that was such a big part of the kid's life for a period of time is no longer there.  I feel that way about the swaddle.  I'm trying to remember the last night I swaddled him, but it already seems like a long time ago.  It's bittersweet.

For a baby that was used to being bound up, it didn't take him long to discover the spread eagle position!

Quotes by Jonah

Mommy this song sounds like it would be really beautiful if you weren't singing along.

I'm cold! Turn on the heat conditioner!

Can we go get a haircut so I can get a lolly pop? That sounds like a REALLY good plan, doesn't it?

So playful!

Mr helpful

Sometimes trey can be so helpful! He is helping Jonah with his homework.

what was that about?

In the middle of the night I was woken up by little hands poking me.

Jonah:  my clock says 1:03.

Me:  huh?

Jonah:  my clock says 1:03

Me:  probably because it is 1:03.  (checked my clock) Yes, it's 1:03.

Jonah:  oh.

then he walks out,

huh??  what was that about?  I don't EVER remember Jonah coming into our room at night, not even when he is sick.

He sure is!

Happy valentine's day!

Me:  happy valentines day Jonah!  Will you be my valentine?

Jonah:  sure.  You can give me hugs, candy, and kisses, but not smoochy kisses.

Happy 8 month birthday Eli!

1.5 weeks late with the post, but at least the pictures were taken on his birthday!  :)

Loves
- playing with cups
- peek a boo
- gurgling with his own spit

Hates having his nose touched

Very ticklish

Makes a sound when the phone rings or microwave beeps

Understands the word milk - like a dog he'll start drooling when you make a bottle

Now eating meals in his high chair

Fascinated with tags

Reaches for everything

Still swaddled

4oz bottle every 3-4 hours plus 3 meals of solids per day

Just started liking puffs and bits of banana.  He will pick up the food, but doesn't get it into his mouth (doesn't even try) so he will open his mouth when he wants more

Staring to care when you take something away

Reaches out his arms when you go to pick him up

When you carry him, he will straighten his arms behind him like he's trying to fly away

you can see his 2 bottom teeth in this one!

"picture time is OVER mommy! You have enough!"

Eli thinks the dogs are hysterical!

At least someone pays attention to them.

A new plan for baths

Eli has never been a fan of baths.  I've tried to bathe him in the sink, in the spa tub that Jonah LOVED, and in the big bath by propping him against my legs.  On a good day he tolerates it until I get him out, then he starts crying.  Then I had an epiphany!  I remember how much fun Trey and Jonah used to have in the bath before they moved to showers, so maybe Eli just needed some entertainment.  I put him in the bath with Jonah in his bumbo (which I'm sure there is a warning against).  He actually smiles and laughs now!  And it's good for Jonah to play "helpful older brother" and have a way to help with Eli.  I probably lay on the praise a little thick, but usually he's so in Eli's face that we ask him to move away, so I want to make sure he has something to be proud of when it comes to helping with Eli.
